China Unveils HQ-29: Mobile Missile Defense System Capable of Intercepting ICBMs and Hypersonic Threats

Armored Vehicles, Future Warfare, Military Innovation

China has publicly demonstrated its new Hongqi-29 (HQ-29) missile defense system, and the photo of the mobile SAM appeared on the roads in June 2025. This system is positioned as the first mobile complex of China, designed to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), medium -range ballistic missiles (BRSD) and even hypersonic missiles in the middle section of the trajectory.

The HQ-29 system consists of several key elements: six-axle transport and launch plants (TPUs), each of which carries two vertical launch containers; specialized management and control machine; And a missiles-interceptor. The most important aspect of its operational potential is its integration into a single information exchange network that receives data from ground radar stations of early warning about rocket attacks, reconnaissance satellites and monitoring and measurement systems of the Liaown series. This network approach is critical for rapid detection, tracking and lesions of high -speed ballistic and hypersonic threats. The declared technical characteristics of the HQ-29 are very impressive: the interception range is up to 2000 kilometres and the interception height of up to 1,500 kilometres. It is reported that interceptor missiles are able to develop speeds of up to 18 sides. The guidance system is a combination of inertial navigation, command guidance, satellite navigation correction of BEIDOU and passive two -band infrared homing head to defeat goals in the final section of the trajectory. This multi -level approach to instilling is aimed at increasing accuracy and resistance resistance.

The development of the HQ-29 demonstrates how China goes from interceptions in the final section of the trajectory, such as the HQ-9, to the interception system on the middle section of the trajectory. This puts China on a par with the United States and Russia, which have or developing such advanced missile defense technologies. Although China conducted its first testing of the ground-based Pro in 2010, the emergence of the HQ-29 mobile system indicates a transition to a wider operational deployment. This system is considered as an addition to the multi -level architecture of the missile defense, which increases the ability of China to protect critical objects and potentially project force.
